The holiday season is upon us and between holiday parties, gift-giving and get-togethers with family and friends; it is easy for expenses to get off track.

Don’t fret – there are plenty of ways to save money and stay organized while enjoying the holiday season to the fullest.

Here are some of our favourite holiday savings tips!

1. Set your holiday budget

Save yourself money and time by making a holiday plan at the beginning of the season. Start by determining your overall holiday budget – including gifts, food, travel, and any other expenses you expect will be heading your way. Be realistic with your plan, and don’t forget to consider your ongoing monthly payments. To help you stick to your budget, try using cash. It might feel a bit old-fashioned, but it is a useful method to keep your spending on track.

Tip: Bank the points you accumulate through rewards programs and use them to help supplement your holiday budget. Double-points days, credit card promotions, and buying your groceries with points and offers in mind are great ways to make the most of your rewards come December.

2. Shop with a plan

While window-shopping may be appealing, it’s also a sure-fire way to spend more than your budget. Brain-storm ideas before you shop, and check out flyers for coupons or promotions. You’d be surprised how many stores may price match, if you simply ask!

Tip: Before buying the newest gadget, check if there’s a previous generation that came out last year. Chances are the older model will save you a significant amount of cash!

3. A new approach to gift-giving

Try a different approach to your gift exchange by introducing budget-friendly and fun parameters. You’ll have a blast seeing what your friends and family come up with when the gift has to be hand-made, second-hand, or an experience instead of a physical object.

Tip: Sometimes giving memories is just as important as creating them. Get those photos off of your phone and onto something tangible! There are plenty of neat options out there; from photo books to blankets, or even just printing photos and wrapping them in a cute memory box. Get them a unique gift they’ll never find in-store.

4. Start planning for next year now

Starting next year’s plan while you’re still working through this year will make things so much simpler in the long run. Have a look at your budget; did you meet your spend limits this year? Are there people to remove from your gift list? Take this into consideration when you’re planning for next year. By starting to budget and shop all year long, you’ll alleviate the financial pressure that comes with waiting until the holiday season to buy.

Tip: Watch for seat sales or promotions, and purchase your travel in advance. You’ll save yourself time, money and stress the earlier you book!

With all of these savings tips on hand, you’re set to make the most of the holiday season – without breaking the bank.
